‘Can Cop’ from the beginning of Half Life 2 is only in the game for about 30 seconds, looks and sounds exactly like everyone other Civil Protection Unit in the entire game, and does nothing important at all. All he does is knock over an empty can and orders you to pick it up. If you do what he says, he laughs and belittles you. If you refuse (or throw it at him), he beats you senseless. He does literally nothing important or noteworthy. Yet he’s one of the most recognizable characters of the entire Half Life franchise.

Why?

Because he’s a dick.
He’s a dick and you hate him.
He’s a dick who existed to only be a dick to you and make you pick up his fucking garbage.
He woke up one day and said “I’m going to be a huge fucking dick because I can.”
And he did just that.

Can Cop could be a metaphor for the Combine’s unnecessary cruelty towards the people of Earth.

Or he could just be a huge fucking dick.
